Meaningful Finnish origin – this is what it means

Valio, including Valio Aimo®, is owned by approximately 3,200 Finnish dairy farms through regional cooperatives. We pay out all the profits of our operations to the milk producers – regardless of whether the profits come from wholesale or retail.

We create employment from Hanko to Utsjoki

Finns are more self-sufficient than many other nations: we produce most of our food from Finnish raw materials, with Finnish work. Choose us to keep our fields growing and our factories running – you can help keep Finland working.

Valio is proud to invest and pay taxes in Finland, thus ensuring the continuation of food production in Finland. Each dairy farm employs roughly three people: dairy farmers, a veterinarian, vacation help, feed makers and machine maintainers. In addition, Valio employs numerous professionals.

We always pay out our profits to the dairy farms

We measure Valio’s financial success with a value we have created for milk that we call milk return. Valio’s Board uses this figure to determine our milk price, which is paid to our cooperatives. In turn, the cooperatives independently decide on the producer price that they pay to the milk producers.

It is Valio’s job to achieve the best possible milk return for the milk it buys from the farms. The price we pay for milk has been higher than the EU average throughout the 2000s.

  1. Milk profit = turnover − other expenses, excluding depreciations, milk producer prices paid to the owners, and partner loan interest.
  2. Milk return = (Milk profit − depreciation need of fixed assets, i.e. investment funding needs) / milk volume supplied by owners.

Get to know our farms

Valio plays a significant role in Finnish food production: Valio’s dairy farmers produce about 80% of Finnish milk. When you choose us, you also support Finnish dairy farmers. It’s good taste – and it’s good value too.

Guttorm Farm, Utsjoki

In the northernmost reaches of Lapland, by the banks of the Teno River and amid the fells, lies the Guttorm Farm – the northernmost dairy farm in Europe. Irene and Urho run a farm that is a unique mix of Sámi culture, Nordic nature and traditional milk production.

Kari Organic Farm, Lehtimäki

The Kari organic farm in Lehtimäki, South Ostrobothnia, also features a small farm museum that chronicles the history of the farm. Tiina and Ville’s farm is the picture of rural life, where modern farming and culture go hand in hand.

Montelo Farm, Sonkajärvi

The history of the Montelo farm in Northern Savo goes back to 1734. Anni and Jarkko are the tenth generation running the farm to produce food. They are an example of a generational approach to Finnish traditions and agriculture.

We support the security of supply

The pandemic and the global political situation have brought the importance of security of supply to the fore. What do we eat if the power goes out, or the information systems fail?

Valio is a critical operator for the security of supply: this means we play an important role in ensuring the availability and security of supply of food. In addition, Valio Aimo is a partner of MaRa ry, which operates as the home organisation of the Food Service Pool. Established in January 2024, the Food Service Pool supports cooperation between food service operators in the development of the security of supply and promotes sector and site-specific operational preparedness.

Our eyes are on sustainability

We are all responsible for the environment, economy, people and society. The cornerstones of sustainability at Valio are the cooperative business, healthy animals and sustainable milk production.

We have also defined the main themes for Valio Aimo’s sustainability work that support the wholesale trade. Valio Aimo’s sustainability efforts focus on an efficient operation, sustainable sourcing and customer support.

Our journey towards carbon-neutral milk 2035

Food production is based on natural resources, which we must be able to use wisely. That is why milk producers and agriculture play a key role in mitigating climate change, solving environmental problems and halting the loss of biodiversity.

Valio has an ambitious climate programme that consists of tangible actions for carbon-neutral milk by 2035.
